Konstantinos Karmiris is an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at the Medical School of the University of Crete, Greece since January 2025. He graduated as MD from the Medical School of the University of Crete, Greece in 1997, where he obtained his PhD in 2009. He enjoyed scholarships from the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology and the European Crohns and Colitis Organization (ECCO).
He worked as a postgraduate research fellow with the IBD Group and as an active member at the Endoscopy Unit at the University Hospitals in Leuven, Belgium (2/2007-6/2008). Subsequently, he was employed as a senior consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology, Venizeleio General Hospital, Heraklion, Crete, from 7/2008-12/2024. He was clinically and scientifically responsible for the IBD unit while he also practiced all diagnostic and interventional endoscopic procedures of the digestive tract.
He has served as a member in the CONFER Steering Committee (2017-2020), a member (2020-2023) and Chair (2023-2025) in the Educational Committee and a member in the Clinical Committee of ECCO to serve a term between 2025-2028. He has participated in the working groups of the 1st ECCO pathogenesis scientific workshop and the guidelines of ECCO for medical and surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis (2017 & 2021) & Crohn’s disease (2024), opportunistic infections & vaccinations (2021 & 2025), malignancies (2022), extraintestinal manifestations and anemia (2023) and the diagnostics and monitoring (2025) of IBD. He was also member of the Organizing Committee of the 20th Congress of ECCO (Berlin 2025) and he organised the Intensive Course for Trainees at the 19th and 20th Congresses of ECCO. He has served as an instructor representing ECCO at the Educational Workshops held in Kaunas, Lithuania (2008), Taiwan (virtual 2021) and Katowice Poland (2025) and as local faculty in two Workshops held in Athens (2012 & 2018). He is one of the two National Representatives for the iCare multicenter European study.

His main fields of scientific interest are infections, vaccination, extraintestinal manifestations and immunogenicity of biologics in IBD. His scientific work has contributed so far to 102 peer-reviewed publications (Scopus h-index: 34) as well as more than 120 oral presentations/posters and 20 lectures in International Congresses.
