The Genomics (NGS) Unit of the School of Medicine, University of Crete, is equipped with the following instruments:
The Illumina NextSeq 2000 is an advanced next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform designed for rapid, flexible, and high-quality genomic analysis. Using Illumina’s Sequencing by Synthesis (SBS) technology, the system can generate hundreds of millions to over one billion sequencing reads per run with exceptional accuracy. It supports a broad range of applications, including whole-genome sequencing (WGS), RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq), metagenomics, targeted sequencing, and single-cell genomics. Multiple flow cell configurations allow data output to be tailored to the requirements of individual projects, making the NextSeq 2000 an ideal solution for medium- to high-throughput sequencing.
Illumina MiSeq Sequencing System
The Illumina MiSeq is a compact next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform designed for rapid and reliable analysis of small- to medium-scale genomic projects. Based on Illumina Sequencing by Synthesis (SBS) technology, it delivers high-quality sequencing data and is particularly suitable for targeted sequencing, microbial genomics, metagenomics, microbiome analysis (e.g., 16S rRNA sequencing), and small-scale whole-genome sequencing. The MiSeq provides a flexible solution for fast-turnaround NGS applications.
Oxford Nanopore MinION Mk1B Sequencer
The Oxford Nanopore MinION Mk1B is a portable next-generation sequencing platform that uses nanopore sequencing technology to directly sequence DNA or RNA molecules in real time. Unlike conventional short-read sequencing platforms, nanopore sequencing enables ultra-long reads that can extend to hundreds of thousands or even millions of bases. The MinION is particularly well suited for whole-genome sequencing, metagenomics, microbiome analysis, structural variant detection, and de novo genome assembly. Its compact size, USB connectivity, and real-time data generation make it suitable for both laboratory-based and field applications.
