Mitsias Panagiotis
Professor of Neurology
Medical School, University of Crete, P.C. 70013 Heraklion, Crete
I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece and completed my medical education in the School of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1984. Subsequently, I completed my Neurology Residency and then Stroke Fellowship training at Henry ford Hospital, Detroit, MI, USA, under the tutelage of two great scholars and mentors, Professor K.M.A. Welch and Professor Steven R. Levine. I remained at Henry Ford Hospital where I initially built, organized and directed the Acute Stroke Unit, an 18 bed unit in a stepdown ICU environment, the first of its kind in the State of Michigan. Subsequently, in collaboration with a group of Stroke Neurologists, Emergency Physicians and Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiologists, I founded, built, organized and directed the Comprehensive Stroke Center of Henry Ford Health System, a major referral center for the management of all types of complex cerebrovascular disorders, certified by the US Joint Commission. This allowed the development of multidepartmental and multilevel collaborations and strong team building skills.
During my multi-year tenure at Henry Ford Hospital, I developed clinical research expertise in the fields of advanced treatments of acute stroke, post-stroke stroke recovery and advanced MR imaging of stroke, and collaborated with a strong team of basic and clinical research experts. I was part of the original stroke team that worked on the NINDS tPA stroke study, and worked on multiple clinical trials addressing acute stroke treatment and secondary stroke prevention. For my investigator-initiated studies I was awarded research grants from the NINDS-NIH, either through the independtn investigator channel (R01) or the program project channel (P01). These projects resulted in an abundance of new data which are still being analyzed and reported. The vision of these projects is on the development of MRI-guided therapies for post-stroke recovery but also in the acute phase of stroke.
I returned to Greece in 2015, after I was elected in the position of Professor and Chair of Neurology at the University of Crete, with the vision to develop a modern Department of Neurology and a comprehensive stroke center. In this environment there are many able and extremely competent young collaborators in the clinical and also in the academic spheres. In the process, with several colleagues we developed a network of stroke experts in the country which forms the basis for clinical improvement, development of new pathways of treatment and collaborative projects in clinical research. This can go a very long way. I believe that the challenges in stroke care and research that we face in Greece at this stage are similar to the challenges several other European countries are currently facing. I feel a strong commitment towards improving stroke care across the continuum, advancing stroke research, and training the next generations of stroke physicians in Greece while also collaborating with other experts to do the same across Europe.
In the Department of Neurology, University General Hospital, we expanded the clinical and academic mission in several fields of Neurology. Stroke care and research was advanced, by building an Acute Stroke Unit and organizing the Acute Stroke Team for emergency treatment of ischemic stroke with reperfusion therapies, including IV thrombolysis and Endovascular Thrombectomy. An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit was organized and started functioning int he present year. Theere is a stroke Movement Disorders Clinic and Center offering advanced treatments for Parkinson Disease, including DBS and continuous L-Dopa infusions. A Dementia Clinic is running offering advanced diagnostic and treatment options for patients. Similarly, neuroimmunology and neurogenetics are in the forefront of advances in Neurology.
Along with the clinical advances, I am responsible for the Neurology Course in the 7th Semester of studies for Medical Students, where a comprehensive introduction to Neurology is presented. I am also in charge of the clinical rotation in Neurology where Medical Students receive hands on clinical experience in the field. Similarly, at present I supervise the doctoral dissertations of 5 doctoral students in various aspects of stroke clinical treatments and neuroimaging
