Dr Alexandra Papaioannou is Professor of Anaesthesiology. Professor Papaioannou graduated from the Medical School of the University of Crete in 1995 and specialized in Anaesthesiology at the University Hospital of Heraklion. She holds a doctoral dissertation, which she received in 2004 from the School of Medicine at the University of Crete, on the topic of the effect of the type of Anaesthesia on Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction of Elderly Patientspatients. Professor Papaioannou is a Diplomate of the European Diploma of Anaesthesia and Intesive Care of the European Society of Anaesthesiology. Professor Papaioannou received training in Intensive Care and Cardiac Anaesthesia for 6 months at Kings College Hospital, London, and she was also trained in pre- and in- hospital Emergency medicine for 2 months, at the University Hospital of Leuven Belgium and at Hope Hospital Manchester.
Professor Papaioannou works at the University of Crete, since 2006 and she has established the Laboratories of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Airway Management and Medical Simulation, while in 2020 she introduced simulation in pregraduate training. Professor Pappaionnou holds the scientific responsibility of programme ZOE (LIFE) of the Region of Crete, a novel Public Access Defibrilation Programme.
Her reasearch involves postoperative cognitive dysfunction, teaching methodology and diffusion of cardiopulmnary resuscitation, the effects of inhaled anaesthetics on respiratory mechanics etc. She is the author of > 40 studies with > 3000 ciatations and h-index 18.
Professor Papaioannou is the Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University Hospital of Heraklion since 2013.
