Dr. Evaggelia Akoumianaki, Assistant Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, graduated from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) School of Medicine in 2000 and specialized in Pulmonology and Tuberculosis at “Sotiria” Hospital. She specialized in Intensive Care at the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) and received her specialization title in Intensivology in 2011. She holds a doctoral dissertation, which she received in 2014 from the School of Medicine at the University of Crete, on the topic of the effect of various mechanical ventilation models on the respiratory effort of critically ill patients.
From 2011-2013, she worked as a researcher in the ICU of the Geneva University Hospitals (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, HUG), in the team of Professor Laurent Brochard. From 2016 to 2017, she worked as an intensivist in Germany (Göttingen (Universitätsklinikum Göttingen, Klinikum Kassel, Hessen, Deutschland)). In 2017, she returned to the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion, initially as an attending physician and from April 2022 as an Assistant Professor of Intensive Care Medicine.
Her research focuses on the physiology of respiration, patient-ventilator interaction, and lung and diaphragm protection. She has published over 30 original studies and reviews in high-impact international journals, with more than 5,000 citations and an h-index of 23. She also participates as a principal or co-investigator in many Greek and international multicenter studies, some of which are funded by the European Union (Horizon Europe). She has been honored with international research awards (ESICM Bernhard Dräger Award, ATS Scholarship) and recognized as an “Emerging Investigator” in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (2025).
She is an active member of scientific societies and a reviewer for top-tier international journals. She has also been repeatedly invited as a speaker and trainer at summer schools, workshops, and scientific conferences in Greece and abroad (Uppsala University, ESICM Congresses, etc.).
