Elena Drakonaki is an Assistant Professor of Anatomy at the Medical School of the University of Crete, being responsible for the module of Musculoskeletal Anatomy.
She trained in Radiology at the University Hospital of Heraklion and Birmingham University Hospital, UK and as a musculoskeletal radiology and PET/CT fellow at the Oxford Nuffield Orthopedic and Churchill Cancer, UK. She holds the European Diploma of Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK) and a PhD thesis from the University of Crete Medical School. She has been a lecturer of Anatomy at the European University of Cyprus Medical School. Her research and clinical interests include imaging anatomy, musculoskeletal imaging and ultrasound elastography and intervention. She has delivered more than 90 invited lectures and hands-on tutorials as an invited faculty member in meetings and workshops. She has contributed as author/co-author in more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in the topic of MSK Radiology and Anatomy including ESSR and EFSUMB guidelines.
She is active in the European Radiology Society (ESR) and European Skeletal Radiology Society (ESSR) and International skeletal Society (ISS) as committee member, including ESSR Ultrasound Subcommittee, ESSR Intervention Committee, Evaluation committee for the ESR Fellowships, ESSR Education Committee, ESR Education Committee, ISS Research and Education Committee.
Currently she is Vice-President of the European Society of Skeletal Radiology (ESSR) and the in-coming President in 2026-2027. She is a member of the Program Planning Committee of the European Congress of Radiology (2024-2026) and the vice-chair of the Hellenic Society of Skeletal Radiology. She has also served in other leadership roles, being the Chair of the ESSR Educational Committee with responsibility of managing the ESSR Diploma in MSK radiology (EDiMSK) (2021-2024) and the director of the ESSR webinar program (2023-24).

2/2010- 2/2011: Recepient of a Post doctoral research grand for 12 months awarded by the Hellenic National Institution of Grands and Awards (IKY) for the research protocol entitled: “Diffusion weighted MR imaging, Ultrasonography and Ultrasound Elastography in soft tissue tumours: imaging features with pathologic correlation”.
