The Microscopy Unit of the School of Medicine, University of Crete, is equipped with the following instruments:
Leica SP8 Inverted Confocal Microscope
The Leica SP8 is a state-of-the-art inverted laser scanning confocal microscope designed for high-resolution fluorescence imaging of cells and tissues. Confocal technology enables the acquisition of optical sections at different sample depths, reducing out-of-focus light and allowing three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction. The system is suitable for both fixed and live-cell imaging and supports multicolor fluorescence imaging using multiple excitation lasers.
Leica SP2 Upright Confocal Microscope
The Leica SP2 is an upright laser scanning confocal microscope designed for high-resolution fluorescence imaging of cells, tissues, and histological specimens. The system enables optical sectioning and three-dimensional image reconstruction through confocal scanning, making it ideal for studying subcellular structures and molecular interactions.
Leica DM‑IRE2 Inverted Fluorescence Microscope
The Leica DM-IRE2 is an inverted fluorescence microscope primarily used for observing cell cultures and performing live-cell experiments. The system enables fluorescence imaging and phase-contrast microscopy, providing flexibility for studies of cellular morphology and dynamic biological processes.
Zeiss Laser Capture Microdissection System
The Zeiss Laser Capture Microdissection System enables the isolation of specific cells or tissue regions from microscopic specimens using laser technology. This approach provides precise isolation of cellular populations from heterogeneous samples for downstream molecular analyses such as DNA, RNA, and protein analysis.
Zeiss AXIO Observer A1
The Zeiss AXIO Observer A1 is an inverted fluorescence microscope designed for advanced cell micromanipulation and microinjection applications. The system enables precise manipulation of individual cells and is widely used in cell biology, genetics, and developmental biology research.
