Emmanouil Paraskakis is a Professor of Pediatrics – Pediatric Pulmonology at the Department of Medicine of the University of Crete and Head of the Pediatric Ddepartment at the University Hospital of Heraklion. He is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Crete and a PhD graduate from the same school. He received his specialty in pediatrics at the University Hospital of Heraklion in 2002. He prepared his doctoral thesis on the study of microsatellite DNA instability in cytological samples of patients with asthma. He received further training in Pediatric Pulmonology at the Royal Brompton in London. He has worked in university hospitals in Greece and Europe such as the University Hospital of Heraklion, Alexandroupolis and the Royal Brompton in London. He has taught at the medical schools of the Universities of Crete, Thrace and Imperial College London. He also teaches in postgraduate programs of the universities of Thrace, Crete, Athens and Thessaly. He has extensive experience in Pediatric Pulmonology and since 2008 he has been head of the pediatric pulmonary units of the University Hospitals of Alexandroupolis and Heraklion. He is elected president (2015-2019 and 2022-2025) and vice-president (2019-2022) of the Hellenic Pediatric Pulmonology Society.
His research activity includes basic research and clinical studies and he has published in high-impact journals with international readership and numerous bibliographic references.
He supervises postgraduate and undergraduate students and is a reviewer in international scientific journals. His current research interests focus on methods for non-invasive measurements of inflammation in children with respiratory diseases, on new methods for spirometric assessments in preschool children as well as on methods for predicting asthma exacerbations.
