Goulielmos George
Professor in Genetics (Human Molecular Genetics with emphasis in Internal Medicine)
Medical School, University of Crete, P.C. 70013 Heraklion, Crete
George N. Goulielmos is currently Professor of “Genetics (Human Molecular Genetics with emphasis in Internal Medicine)” at the Medical School of the University of Crete. Dr. Goulielmos completed his undergraduate studies at the Department of Biology of the University of Patras and received his B.Sc. in 1985. He then pursued postgraduate studies and completed his PhD at the Department of Biology of the University of Patras (1989). He continued his postdoctoral studies for 10 years in the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete (Heraklion), the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Heraklion), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-EMBL (Heidelberg, Germany), the BIOZENTRUM (Basel, Switzerland) and the Department of Biology of the University of Crete.
He is involved in the research and educational activities of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Medical School of the University of Crete from 2004 to present, possesses extensive teaching experience in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and is a member of various national and international scientific associations. He has also received many honors and awards for his scientific achievements, he was the principle investigator (P.I.) in many research grants awarded to him, funded by national and European resources, while he participated also as a senior scientist in many international scientific consortia and programs. He is an editorial board member and ad hoc reviewer in a big number of international scientific journals, has served in various roles in committees of the Medical School of Crete as well as in organizing committees of many scientific conferences, while has also served as a reviewer in international scientific institutes and funding organizations.
He has contributed as author/co-author in more than 175 peer-reviewed papers in major peer-reviewed international journals, in the topics of Biochemical and Evolutionary Genetics / Human Molecular Genetics / Cell Molecular Biology/ Molecular Evolution / Molecular-Structural Biology. He is actively involved in laboratory-based translational research focusing on the delineation of molecular mechanisms leading to Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) as well as various autoimmune, metabolic, pediatric, inflammatory and gynecological diseases. Moreover, Dr. Goulielmos is also involved in the investigation of new, disease-associated gene polymorphisms and attempts to approach their functional significance, aiming to the identification of potential novel targets for pharmaceutical intervention.

– Visiting Scientist in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg, Germany (September 1997-October 1998). (Scientific topic: Cell Molecular Biology).
George Goulielmos has expertise in the genetic study of both monogenic and complex diseases. He is devoted to the investigation of key pathogenetic events in a variety of autoimmune, metabolic, infectious and inflammatory diseases. Dr. Goulielmos applies human molecular genetics as a tool to understand the genetics of various complex diseases and, mainly, of the autoimmune diseases, with the ultimate task being the understanding of the functional significance of the detected, disease-associated gene polymorphisms. Recently, his research focuses on the genetic basis of endometriosis, the elucidation of the overlap between endometriosis and adenomyosis and the untangling of the genetic signature underlying endometriosis and adenomyosis in European and Eastern Mediterranean populations.
