Emmanouil K. Symvoulakis has served as Assistant Professor of Primary Care and Public Health at the Department of Social and Family Medicine, Medical School, University of Crete, since 2019. He became Head of the Clinic of Occupational Medicine in the University Hospital of Heraklion in 2021. He was tenured in a permanent position as Assistant Professor in 2022 and he was appointed, with assignment, Head of the Clinic of Social Preventive Medicine within the Department of Social Medicine. In 2023, he was elected Associate Professor of Primary Care and Public Health at the University of Crete, and in 2024, he assumed the role of Head of the Department of Social Medicine at the Medical School.
He received his medical degree from the Medical School of the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Italy. Between 2003 and 2007, he completed his doctoral thesis, entitled “Study of the Role of RAF and RAS Genes in Malignant Neoplasms of the Colon”, at the Medical School of the University of Crete, during which he undertook a six-month educational leave at the Department of General Practice and Primary Care, King’s College London.
His clinical experience began with a specialization in General Medicine at the University Hospital of Heraklion (PA.G.N.I.) from 2002 to 2006, including clinical practice at the Lambeth Walk Group Practice in London. From 2007 to 2009, he worked as Assistant Registrar in General Medicine at the Blood Donation Unit of PA.G.N.I., while also serving as a scientific associate at the Department of Social and Family Medicine, University of Crete. From 2011 to 2019, he ran a private general practice clinic in an urban setting. Between 2021 and the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as Head of a Vaccination Line and Head of the Occupational Medicine Clinic at the University Hospital of Heraklion.
His scientific contributions include extensive participation in research programs at the Department of Clinical Social and Family Medicine, University of Crete. He also served as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Primary Care and Public Health Sciences, King’s College London, from 2010 to 2015. He has authored over 165 publications indexed in PubMed, 75 of which were published in the last five years, and serves as a reviewer for 15 international journals, including Healthcare, BMJ Open, and BJGP Open.
