Department of Anatomy Medical School

I come from Korissos, Kastoria. I graduated from the 1st Lyceum of Kastoria and was admitted, through the Panhellenic Examinations, to the Medical School of the University of Ioannina, from which I graduated in 2009.

I specialized in Neurosurgery by training in residency programs at the University General Hospital of Ioannina, the General Hospital of Athens “Georgios Gennimatas,” and the University General Hospital of Heraklion. In 2020, after successfully completing the required examinations, I was awarded the title of Specialist in Neurosurgery by the Panhellenic Medical Association. From the completion of my residency until January 2025—when I was sworn in as Assistant Professor with the academic field “Anatomy with emphasis on Neuroanatomy” at the Medical School of the University of Crete—I served as a Neurosurgeon at the University General Hospital of Heraklion. In May 2025, I was additionally assigned clinical duties at the University Neurosurgical Department.

I hold three Master’s degrees: in Neurosciences (Brain and Mind), in International Medicine and Health Crisis Management, and in Emergency and Intensive Care of Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults. Furthermore, I hold a certificate of competence in Emergency Prehospital Medicine, the European Spine Diploma, and a PhD in Neurosciences/Neurotraumatology.

I am a member of the teaching staff of the courses Neuroanatomy, Neurology, and Neurosurgery at the Medical School of the University of Crete. Until 2023, I was responsible for the Theoretical Training Program of residents of the University Neurosurgical Department of the University Hospital of Heraklion, as well as for students in international clinical exchange programs and volunteer students of the University of Crete Medical School who wished to be trained in basic clinical skills.

I have taught Neuroanatomy at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus (academic year 2020–21) and in the English-language medical program of the University of Crete (academic years 2023–24 and 2024–25). Within the framework of the Neuroanatomy course at the University of Crete, I collaborated with Professor Antonis Vakis in the founding and coordination of NeuroTeam. NeuroTeam has about 210 members—medical students, physicians, and scientists. The group focuses on integrating modern interactive teaching methods and organizing neuroscience events, with emphasis on Neuroanatomy and Clinical Neurosciences. Its activities include:
-The successful organization of four Neuroanatomy Workshops (two-day events)
-The establishment of tutorial and laboratory courses in Neuroanatomy
-Bioethics Debates
-The organization of the 1st Summer School of Neuroanatomy of the University of Crete, in July 2023

In the field of postgraduate education, I teach or collaborate academically with the following Master’s Programs:
-International Medicine – Health Crisis Management, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
-Emergencies and Intensive Care in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults, University of Crete
-Forensic Medicine, Anthropology and Imaging, University of Crete
-Neurosciences. Linking Basic Science with Clinical Application, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
-Biomedical Engineering, University of Crete

My main research interests focus on Clinical Neuroanatomy, Neurotraumatology, the application of innovative teaching methods, the study of molecular biomarkers in traumatic brain injury, and the applications of machine learning in Clinical Neurosciences.

I have attended an Anatomy training program at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology of the Medical University of Innsbruck, as well as a Neurosurgery training program with emphasis on Intraoperative Neurophysiology at the Section of Neurosurgery, Department of Neuroscience, Biomedicine and Movement Science of the University of Verona.
