She was born in Heraklion, Crete. In 1992 she received her Medical Degree from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” with distinction (grade 102/110).
In 1997, she obtained her specialty title in Nuclear Medicine with distinction. She served as a physician in the Greek National Health System at the University Hospital of Heraklion until 2008.
In 2001, she received her PhD in Nuclear Medicine from the Medical School of the University of Crete with distinction.
She pursued postgraduate training in PET imaging and kinetic studies using advanced mathematical models at the Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany. During this fellowship, she participated in the European program “TENPET” (2004–2005), focusing on telecommunication in Nuclear Medicine.
She was elected Assistant Professor at the Medical School of the University of Crete in 2008, was tenured in 2012, promoted to Associate Professor in 2015, and to Full Professor in 2020.
Since 2013, she has been Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital of Heraklion.
She has been a member of the Undergraduate Studies Committee of the Medical School of the University of Crete since 2015 and Coordinator of the Internal Evaluation Committee (OMEA) since 2022.
Her clinical work since 1997 includes performing annually more than 7,000 diagnostic procedures and over 500 radioisotopic therapeutic applications. She significantly expanded the Department of Nuclear Medicine with advanced equipment (installation of the first hybrid SPECT/CT and digital PET/CT systems in Greece) and established four dedicated rooms for radionuclide therapies. She pioneered novel radionuclide therapies in Crete and nationwide.
She has served on multiple committees, including the “Quality Control” Committee for continuous evaluation of healthcare services, the High-Cost/Imported Drugs Committee, and the Hellenic Central Health Council (KESY) Working Group on the Nuclear Medicine specialty, responsible for defining training hospitals and creating the national logbook for Nuclear Medicine residents.
She has organized numerous national and international conferences and seminars. She has been invited as a speaker in more than 150 national- international congresses and has presented over 220 scientific abstracts. Her scientific output includes more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor, cited 2,354 times according to Scopus (h-index 21) and 5,096 times according to Google Scholar (h-index 29). She is the author of four book chapters in Greek and four in international textbooks and has received 15 awards and distinctions for her scientific work.
She serves on the editorial board of the Hellenic Journal of Nuclear Medicine and as reviewer for European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (EJNMMI), Acta Radiologica, JCC, and EJSO.
Since 2018, she has been elected General Secretary of the Hellenic Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging (HSNMMI) and National Delegate of the UEMS.
Her main research interests include Oncology, Cardiology, and Neurology, with a special focus since 2019 on hybrid imaging applications with SPECT/CT and PET/CT on Oncology, Neurology and Infections.

POSTGRADUATE TRAINING ABROAD
• Guest Scientist at the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum). Training in PET imaging (12 months, October 2004 – October 2005) and in kinetic studies using specialized mathematical models. During this training, I participated in the European program “TENPET”, which focused on telecommunication in Nuclear Medicine.
• Training at the Parkinson Institute, University of Milan, in imaging techniques of basal ganglia for Parkinson’s disease & Parkinson-plus syndromes.

Dr. Koukouraki’s main research interests focus on hybrid PET/CT imaging in Oncology, Neurology, and Infectious Diseases, as well as on novel radionuclide therapies in patients with neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer.
