Dr Kalaitzakis completed his medical studies at the medical school of the University of Crete. He defended his PhD thesis at the Sahlgrenska Academy (Gothenburg university, Sweden) in 2006 and completed his training in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Scandinavia in the same year. He subspecialized in interventional endoscopy, at the University College London Hospital in London and Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, UK, as well as at the Asan Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea. He has been appointed an associate professor of medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy (Gothenburg University), Sweden and at the medical scool of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

– pancreatoplogy (acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cystic lesions, etc)
– hepatology (liver cirrhosis and complications, drug-induced liver injury, Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), etc)
Dr Kalaitzakis has en extensive research background in gastroenterology and interventional endoscopy. He directs and is actively involved in national and international research projects. He has served as an editor of a textbook in interventional endoscopic ultrasound and he (co-)authored in excess of 150 research papers. He participates actively in national and international medical conferences. He is actively involved in international task groups for the development of guidelines regarding interventional endoscopy (in particular ERCP and EUS). He is a member of the editorial board of several international gastroenterology journals. . He has been included in the Stanford’s Top 2% scientists list (2024).
