Prof. Nikolaos Galanakis is an Assistant Professor of Interventional Radiology at the School of Medicine, University of Crete, and served as a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at the University Hospital of Heraklion during the period 2020–2025.
He graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Crete in 2013 and completed his PhD in 2020, focusing on on the role of CT and MR perfusion techniques in patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease. He also holds a Master’s degree in Health-Care Management and the European Certification in Interventional Radiology from the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR). He was a clinical fellow in Germany and Italy.
His clinical practice includes the majority of interventional radiology procedures including peripheral endovascular procedures, venous interventions, EVAR, transarterial embolization and chemoembolization, radiofrequency and microwave ablation, biliary and genitourinary interventions.
Prof. Nikolaos Galanakis has authored or co-authored more than 55 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 2 book chapters and he has presented numerous oral and poster scientific presentations and invited lectures in national and international conferences. He has received 9 awards or distinctions for his research activities. He serves as a reviewer for more than 10 PubMed-indexed scientific journals.
His main research interests focus on peripheral arterial disease, endovascular aneurysm treatment, and perfusion imaging techniques using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
Prof. Galanakis is President of the Radiological Society of Crete, a board member of Medical Association of Heraklion, and a member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE), the Hellenic College of Radiology, and the Hellenic Radiological Society. He is also member of the CIRSE Therapies and Treatment Task Force.
