Dr . Paraskevi Xekouki is Associate Professor in Endocrinology at the Medical School of the University of Crete, Director of the Endocrinology Clinic of the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) and Scientific Lead of the Diabetes Center of PAGNI. She is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Athens where she acquired her doctoral thesis. After completing her specialty in Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, she moved to the National Institutes of Health in the USA on a scholarship from the Hellenic Endocrinological Society where as a postdoctoral fellow she specialized in neuroendocrine tumors and especially pituitary, adrenal and paraganglioma tumors for six years while she described the combination of pheochromocytomas/Paragangliomas and pituitary tumors (3Pas) due to mutations in succinate dehydrogenase (SDHx), which has been included in the genetic causes of Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors in the 2017 and 2022 World Health Organization’s (WHO) Pituitary Tumor Classification. She then took a position as a Clinical Lecturer at King’s College Hospital/King’s College London in London for four years where she continued her research and clinical activity. In 2018 she was elected Assistant Professor in Endocrinology at the Medical School of the University of Crete, where she serves until today. She has published more than 73 scientific articles listed in PubMed in high index scientific journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Oncogene, JCI Insights, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrine related Cancer with 2,831 citations and h index: 26 in the Scopus database and 3870 citations with h index 30 in the Google Scholar database. She has authored 10 book chapters in international medical textbooks, while she has given over 50 lectures as a guest speaker at international and Greek scientific conferences and has received over 15 awards and distinctions for her research work as well as funding from the Special Account for Research Funds of University of Crete. She is the supervisor of 3 doctoral dissertations in progress while she also participates in the three-member committee of other dissertations. She is a member of the European Association of Neuroendocrinology as well as the European Society of Endocrinology, and the Hellenic Endocrine Society. She participates in the Editorial Board as Deputy Editor of internal medical journals such as Frontiers in Endocrinology-Cancer Endocrinology section, Endocrinology, Diabetes &Metabolism Case report and Hormones Journal, while she is a regular reviewer of journals such as Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Endocrine related Cancer, European Journal of Endocrinology, Metabolism, Frontiers in Endocrinology.
