Born in Cairo, Egypt, he graduated from Abet School of Cairo, holds a Bachelor of Medicine (MB, Bch) and a Postgraduate Degree in Ophthalmology (Msc Ophthalmology) from the English-instruction Medical School of Cairo University. Holder of a Specialty in Ophthalmology in Greece, Egypt and Cyprus.
Holder of a Doctorate of Medicine (PhD) from the Medical School of the University of Crete (1999)
Subspecialty (Three-Year Clinical & Research Fellowship) in Corneal & Ocular Surface Diseases from the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Israel (Professor Joseph Frucht-Pery)
Serves as Scientific Director of the Corneal Transplant Unit at PAGNI (one of the 5 in the country and the only one in Crete) from 1998 to the present, starting as a Consultant of the National Health System and then a faculty member from the position of Lecturer (2003) with progression after academic elections to the position of Professor (2023). Today he is the only Corneal Transplant Surgeon in Crete and the Unit has performed more than 800 transplants since its establishment.
He specializes clinically and surgically in the anterior segment of the Eye with many years of experience in Cataract Surgery (over 10,000 procedures), Corneal Surgery & Transplants (over 700 procedures), Ocular Surface Surgery (over 1000 procedures) and Laser Refractive Surgery (over 3000 procedures)
He introduced for the first time in Greece the corneal Limbal stem cell transplant operation in combination with amniotic membrane transplantation in severe Ocular Surface diseases such as chemical burns.
