Charalampos Pontikoglou is an Associate Professor of Hematology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete. He is also the scientific director of the Cellular Therapy Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete.
Dr. Pontikoglou received a degree in Biology and a degree in Medicine from the University of Crete, as well as his PhD from the same University. He specialized in Internal Medicine and Hematology at the University General Hospital of Heraklion and pursued further training at the Labor für Leukozytenimmunologie, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Blood Service West, in Hagen, Germany. He has also been a postdoctoral researcher (fellow of the Hellenic Society of Hematology) at the Laboratoire d’Hématopoïèse, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tours, France, as well as at the Laboratory for Hematopoiesis Research at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete.
Dr. Pontikoglou currently serves as:

Dr. Pontikoglou’s main research interests include autoimmune thrombocytopenia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and the study of primitive mesenchymal cells of the bone marrow hematopoietic microenvironment in myeloid and lymphoid malignancies. In addition, Dr. Pontikoglou investigates the properties of bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells as well as Wharton’s jelly–derived mesenchymal stem cells in combination with biomaterials, within the framework of regenerative medicine applications.
He has served as principal investigator in several national research programs and has participated in various international projects. He has authored more than 86 publications, with over 3,000 citations (as of September 2024), and has received 10 awards from the Hellenic Society of Hematology for best abstract or full article.
