Dr. Ioannis Karakis is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Medical School of the University of Crete. Previously, he served as full Professor of Neurology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, USA where he directed for years the Intraoperative Neurophysiology Monitoring Service, the Epilepsy Fellowship and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Programs, and the EEG/Epilepsy Services at Grady Memorial Hospital. After receiving his MD from the Medical School of Athens with distinction, he completed his Neurology Residency at Boston University Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident in his last year of training. He then pursued subsequent subspecialty training in central and peripheral Clinical Neurophysiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Lahey Clinic, Tufts University. He also completed a Master of Science in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD thesis on quality of life in epilepsy in the Democritus University of Thrace. He is board-certified in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuromuscular Medicine, and Epilepsy by the ABPN, in Clinical Neurophysiology with added competency in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring by the ABCN and in Electromyography by the ABEM. He is an elected fellow member of the AAN, ANA, AES, ACNS and AANEM. He also serves in the CNP Examination Committee of the ABPN. He is invested in medical education and has been the recipient of excellence in teaching award and residents’ support award by Emory University in 2013 and 2014 respectively, the 2015 American Academy of Neurology AB Baker Teaching Award and the 2023 American Clinical Neurophysiology Society Teaching Award. His research interests span the whole spectrum of Clinical Neurophysiology. He has >115 peer-reviewed publications in international journals with >2300 citations (H-index 26). He is a member of the editorial board of several journals (Epilepsy Currents, Epileptic Disorders, Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy and Behavior, Epilepsy of Behavior Reports and Αrchives of Clinical Neurology).
