The Department of Basic Sciences started its function in 1985, followed by the election and the assumption of duties of the first five faculty members in November 1984.
The coming years were devoted to the training of the students, to the successful claiming of competitive funding for establishing basic laboratory infrastructure and to the development of the first research laboratories of Biology, Biochemistry Pharmacology and Physiology. During the following years young competitive faculty members have been recruited in various academic positions and fulfilled major contribution to the organization and development of the department.
