Katerina Antoniou is Professor of Pulmonology at Department of Medicine, University of Crete and works as a Pulmonologist at University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI). She is Head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Pulmonology at Medical School, University of Crete.
She graduated with honors in 1998 from Naples University, FEDERICO II, then completed her PhD at Medical School, University of Crete and specialized in Pulmonology in 2005 at University General Hospital of Heraklion.
She also completed postdoctoral studies with scholarship from the European Pulmonological Society and as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Imperial College London with clinical and laboratory research.
She has many years of experience in management of patients with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Autoimmune Diseases, Sarcoidosis, Severe Asthma and Bronchiectasis, with a particular focus on Interstitial Lung Diseases and the promotion and adoption of precision medicine in clinical practice. In the field of clinical research, she has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in the conduct of many international and national multicenter clinical studies.
Her work is focused on the Human-Centered care of patients with Interstitial Lung Diseases. To this end, she collaborates with patient associations at international and national levels and participates in the collaboration of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) with WHO on chronic respiratory diseases. She has participated in the organization of many European and international conferences such as World Congress on Interstitial Lung Diseases, WASOG 2018 in Heraklion, Crete. She is also a member of the writing team for international guidelines and lead author of recently published ERS EULAR guidelines for autoimmune diseases with interstitial lung involvement.
She has received important awards such as ERS Research Award in 2012 for her research in Pulmonary Fibrosis and University of Crete Research Award for 2022.
She is in Stanford list of 2% top scientists for the influence of her work in her scientific field from 2022 to date. Ms. Antoniou has over 250 publications in international journals that have received ~15000 citations with h-index 59. She is ranked 30th in World Expertise in Interstitial Lung Diseases list.
She has served as elected member of Deanship of Medical School, University of Crete (2015-2017), President of Public Relations Committee of University of Crete (2016-2018), member of the Board of Directors of European Society (2018-2024), Head of European Pulmonary Society Working Group on Interstitial Diseases (2021-2024) and is member of WASOG board of directors for interstitial lung diseases.
