Ιοannis Iliopoulos is a Professor of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics at the School of Medicine, University of Crete. He received his degree in Biology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He completed his PhD in Heidelberg, Germany, through a collaboration between the Aristotle University and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). He then pursued postdoctoral studies at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in Cambridge, UK.

1993–1998: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg, Germany

1988–1993: B.Sc. in Biology, Department of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece

Dr. Ioannis Iliopoulos’ research activity focuses on the broader field of Bioinformatics and the analysis of large-scale biological data. One of his main research areas is information extraction from biomedical literature (e.g., PubMed), with the aim of generating new knowledge — for example, predicting protein–protein interactions.

Additionally, he is involved in the development of bioinformatics tools for the analysis of Omics data (such as proteomics, single-cell RNA sequencing, etc.).

Finally, his lab is actively engaged in the study of genomes to address evolutionary questions.
