Oculoplastic surgery concerns disorders of the eyelids, tear drainage, and the eye socket.
Eyelid disorders include congenital malformations (coloboma, epicanthus, telechanthus), congenital or acquired disorders of the position of the eyelid margin (entropion, ectropion, trichiasis), height disorders (ptosis, entropion, ectropion), various benign and malignant tumors of the eyelids, fat prolapse and skin laxity (dermatosis) or traumatic injuries leading to scarring and deformation (e.g., chemical and thermal burns).
Tear drainage disorders include congenital obstruction or narrowing of the nasolacrimal duct, congenital disorders of the structure of the lacrimal puncta or ducts, acquired stenosis of the lacrimal puncta, and acquired stenosis of the nasolacrimal duct.
Orbital disorders include various benign and malignant tumors, fractures of the orbital walls, and inflammatory orbital diseases (such as thyroid orbitopathy, which can cause exophthalmos and compression of the optic nerve, among other things).
These conditions are treated with various surgical procedures that are usually tailored to the needs of each patient and require the appropriate equipment. The equipment available for ophthalmic plastic surgery at PAGNI and LVO includes a radiofrequency diathermy unit, electric drills (mills), a nasal endoscope with an attached camera and cold light unit, a head light unit, and a wide variety of special surgical instruments.
