Mission and Goals

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the study of human physiology and the treatment of diseases are the focus of attention of all developed countries. The training of young scientists in areas arising from the intersection of medicine and the sciences is a strategic objective of education in all Western countries. Such training provides all the prerequisites for a successful scientific career both at national and European level. The coupling of Medicine with sciences such as Mathematics and Physics has been the driving force for a series of scientific activities and innovative discoveries, some of which constitute revolutions in diagnostics and therapeutics.

The field of “optics and vision” is the field that arises from the intersection of Ophthalmology with Physics and Mathematics. This field has experienced dynamic and rapid development in recent years as “classical ophthalmology” has been enriched by developments in areas such as neurophysiology, optics and lasers. This development has created strong collaborations between doctors, physicists, mathematicians, biologists and engineers, putting interdisciplinary cooperation into practice. Achievements of this fruitful collaboration such as the use of lasers for the correction of myopia or the development of modern devices for the detailed study of the optical system of the eye have already become routine tools in ophthalmological clinical practice.

In Greece, the University of Crete has taken the lead in this field. Distinguished scientists from the fields of Ophthalmology, Physics and Mathematics have contributed substantially to international developments and have marked contemporary scientific events. The interdisciplinary collaboration that has formed the basis of these distinctions is consolidated and acquires a new substance with the operation of the new Inter-Institutional and English-speaking Postgraduate Program “Leading Technologies in Vision Sciences”, a joint academic initiative of the University of Crete and the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH).

The Inter-Institutional and English-Speaking Postgraduate Studies Program involves the Departments of Medicine, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, offering a modern, research-oriented and internationally competitive curriculum. The Department of Medicine is responsible for coordination.

Στο Διϊδρυματικό και Αγγλόφωνο Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών συμμετέχουν τα τμήματα Ιατρικής, Επιστήμης και Μηχανικής Υλικών και Μαθηματικών και Εφαρμοσμένων Μαθηματικών, προσφέροντας ένα σύγχρονο, ερευνητικά προσανατολισμένο και διεθνώς ανταγωνιστικό πρόγραμμα σπουδών. Την ευθύνη του συντονισμού έχει το Τμήμα Ιατρικής.
