Ophthalmic Oncology at the University of Crete is a specialized department covering the entire spectrum of diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the eye and its appendages. Here, rare and more common oncological diseases are treated, such as choroidal melanomas, retinoblastomas, lymphomas, and eyelid tumors. The interdisciplinary collaboration of specialized ophthalmologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, pathologists, and medical physicists ensures high-quality care, with the aim of not only controlling tumors locally but also preserving patients’ vision and quality of life. The Department of Ophthalmic Oncology at the University of Crete, headed by Professor of Ophthalmology Efstathios Detorakis, is the only hospital department in Greece with the capability of Ru-106 brachytherapy and serves as a referral center for intraocular tumor cases for the entire Greek population. At the same time, it plays an important role in research in the field of ophthalmic oncology, with research efforts focused on improving diagnostic methods using advanced imaging techniques and utilizing combinations of new technologies to improve the accuracy of therapeutic interventions. Through this activity, the center contributes significantly to both the advancement of scientific knowledge and the improvement of treatment options for patients with eye tumors throughout Greece.
